Springtime is a great time to make a home purchase! With the days getting longer and warmer, it’s a great opportunity to tackle a few projects and make your house feel like home! If you’re a new homeowner, you may be thinking about how to make a dollar stretch. We know that buying a home is a large investment, so instead of stretching your dollar, what if it “bloomed?”
No, we’re not talking about a “money tree” - we’re talking about raised gardens! Not only is gardening a peaceful hobby, but it can also save you hundreds on groceries. Many find great satisfaction digging their hands in the dirt and reaping the fruits of their labor, both deliciously and financially! If you’re thinking, “but, gee, I don’t have much space,” - not to worry. Here’s how to make a raised garden in any situation:
To begin, consider where you’ll place your raised garden bed. How much space DO you have? A basic raised garden bed is generally framed in 3ft-4ft wide by 6ft-8ft long, or to fit the available space. If you have a decent plot of land, where gets the best sun? Most plants and vegetables need 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. Is your space limited? Want to keep it inside? Great! Grab a few planters and set them in front of the window with the best lighting - where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Next, you’ll need enough nutrient rich potting soil to fill the bed 8in-12in deep. (Pro Tip: If you want to “bloom” your dollar even further, try composting!)
Now, based on how large you’ve built your bed, and how much sunlight it will get, think about which plants will do well in this environment. Not all plants have the same needs. What are some of your staple veggies in the fridge? Do you want to start from seed or plant? Here’s a list of vegetables easy to begin with: tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and leafy greens.
Last thing to do is plant! As always, give your garden plenty of water, sunshine, and as much room as possible to grow. Be sure to follow the recommended care instructions that come with your seeds and starter plants to learn how best to care for your garden and ensure a successful first yield.
